The one about how everyone tried to shame the revolutionary spirit using its most convincing imposters. On Kendrick and Ye and Nina Simone and Donald Byrd and the fool and the sage and no saviors
"The fool always wins because he’s willing to risk abject failure for an adventure and he’s always forced to discover himself when inventing false enemies and prophets."
Man Harmony, this was soooo dope. I’m a fool enough to say I love love love this, calling us to love and challenge us to live in love, love enough to be outraged with oppression and lovelessness. Your structure and intellect are so dope, been bench pressing 1,000 with the Pen 💪🏽✍🏽
Oof, this one carpet-bombs the trite, bien pensant, and faux rebellious. I have to admit that I reflexively instrumentalized that 1/2-time show, seeing KL's oblique rhymes and in-jokes as a fig leaf for the raised-finger he and his crew were obviously giving you-know-who with their very presence. But as you say, the minstrelsy of right opinions, empty signifying, identity politics, and the narcissism of minor differences, and I can't confidently say whether K's televised-revolution line was sampling Gil Scott-Heron or the Nike ad.
Another deeply poetic and most excellent piece of writing... Your film clip at the end was poignant on many levels. She knew the meaning of revolution.
“a rehearsed simulation of rebellion” as usual. This was the only take I was ever seeking. Brilliant. Such a journey, this is a technical masterpiece full of heart.
Ye's music has never done anything for me. However, Donald Byrd is one of favorite trumpet players. The trickster in Ye may be dead but the archetype is not bound by time. Your writing is like mercury and lightening.
