“If You Can Hear Me” + “Ask Me About God: On Ye West” reminded me of “Mirrors,” a poem written by the poet Rafael Jesus Gonzalez shared at a recent celebration of life. At the end he says:

…”Some days the mirror will tell half-truths, your eyes clouded

by a gray curtain, the heavy darkness of the world drag down the corners of your mouth. Make faces at it,

stick out your tongue, blow it

a raspberry till it lightens up

and make it laugh.

Do this often until you become yourself a mirror and reflect

to others their presence, their own power of love, compassion, justice, joy, courage to be, to act.

They will themselves become mirrors and we all become halls, mazes of mirrors

to be and make our revolution, our community beloved.”

Recently, someone asked me about how long it takes to grieve (when will the pain stop).

My response was there is no prescription. It could be in the next minute or your next lifetime. There isn’t a timetable to finding your envelope of life with the contents containing your private memory that gives you a reason to smile (and/or at least make peace with a lived or unlived life - of all involved).

“Theres power in healing work. But it isn’t personal power. It cannot satisfy an individual’s craving for self-importance. It’s a real power that has nothing to do with our small selfish dreams. It’s the power to help life create itself. “ Ayi Kwei Armah, The Healers

Keep writing for a beloved community and fingers cross for Ye to find it!

A touching piece.

Anyway, I'm a music writer myself. Perhaps we can subscribe to each other's newsletters.
