Deepest thanks to you for this. This has always been my fave QT movie, and among my fave movies ever, but, until now, i’ve never been able to understand/explain why. I’ll be thinking about what you say here for a long, long time. I think you have penetrated deeply into the meaning of the blues, the supreme, signature essence of American genius, the key to any hope for our survival. I am very grateful to you
This is what they mean when they call something “magisterial.” Incisive criticism, intense and personal investment, spun out into a milieu, then the nation, then the present in an earned organic way. In the length of a Delfonics song.
Another great piece of writing! I appreciate your insight about Tarantino's use of the white savior in his films and how Max Cherry truly honors and respects Jackie Brown. It also brings to mind the white savior, Schultz, in "Django Unchained" and how Tarantino has him transform from the standard model savior into something more subtle and tragic---killing him off and letting the film become fully Django's story to save himself and the love of his life.
Another banger!!!
Now I need to go rewatch. I didn’t get this movie when I was younger but reading this? 💡 after 💡 after 💡 WOW. Thank you!

Pam Grier is so cool! I remember seeing Jackie Brown on television. It was probably my first Tarantino film. I'll give it a rewatch soon.
Amazing, insightful essay. I'm going to go watch this movie now.
