Mary Lou Williams: I’d take them into church with me, I’d take Monk. The first time I took Monk he was frightened, he thought he was gonna die. He said nobody ever asked him to go to church before. He slipped and fell as we were going in. It really frightened him. And I took Bud Powell and Dizzy Gillespie, I took several musicians to church with me.
